How Many Fittings Does a Bespoke Suit Need? (1, 2, or 3?)
Most suits need two fittings, complex builds need three, and returning customers can often skip to one. Here is what each fitting checks.
Every fitting has a specific purpose. When a shop compresses the fitting count, or skips fittings entirely, it’s not saving time neutrally; it’s trading fit accuracy for speed. Here’s what each fitting actually does and when you can safely skip one.
Fitting one: the basted fitting
The basted fitting happens on the roughest version of your suit, the jacket is loosely tacked together with long temporary stitches, the lining isn’t attached, the buttons aren’t sewn on. It looks unfinished because it is. That’s the whole point.
What the tailor is looking at:
- Shoulder balance. Most people have one shoulder slightly lower than the other. The basted fitting is where that asymmetry is caught and corrected.
- Chest closure. The jacket should button without pulling horizontally across the chest. Pulls indicate the chest is cut too small.
- Back collar. Must sit flat against the shirt collar with no gap. Gaps indicate the back is cut too long.
- Waist suppression. How much the jacket tapers from chest to waist. Decided here.
- Jacket length and sleeve length. Set to the customer’s preference.
What changes after the basted fitting: cloth is re-cut where pins indicated changes; the lining gets sewn in; canvas is attached; buttons are sewn on. What arrives at the second fitting is a near-final garment.
Duration: 30-45 minutes.
Fitting two: the forward fitting
By now the suit looks close to finished. Lining is in, buttons are on, canvas is stitched, the pressing has smoothed the lines.
What the tailor is checking:
- Minor refinements to sleeve length (to the millimetre).
- Trouser break, how the trouser falls on the shoe. Full break, half break, no break.
- Collar sit after the canvas is in (sometimes the canvas shifts the collar position very slightly).
- Balance of the trouser seat and rise.
- Any final adjustments the customer wants after having worn the basted version.
Duration: 20-30 minutes.
After the second fitting, the suit goes back to the workshop for final hand-finishing, buttonholes, pressing, removing basting stitches, stitching the lining closed. This usually takes 4-6 hours.
Fitting three: the final polish
On luxury builds (Tier D), on complex bodies (significant asymmetry, unusual proportions), or on suits with intricate features (double-breasted, waistcoat, working buttonholes), a third fitting adds a polish step.
What it catches: Tiny discrepancies that only show on a fully-finished garment. The lapel roll, the cuff drape, the balance under a buttoned-up jacket. At this stage the tailor is working within a 1-2 mm margin.
Duration: 15-20 minutes.
A third fitting is never required. It’s offered. Many customers skip it on a second or third order because they know the block works.
Can you do a bespoke suit with one fitting?
Only if:
- The customer is a returning buyer whose pattern we already have. Their dimensions are proven; the one fitting is a sanity check.
- The suit is a second order on the same pattern within 6-12 months. Body hasn’t changed much.
- The customer specifically accepts the reduced fitting as part of a rush build.
For first-time customers, one-fitting suits are a compromise. The fit will be good but not precise. Save the single-fitting approach for repeat orders.
What zero fittings means
Zero fittings means the suit was made entirely from measurement numbers and shipped or collected without any try-on. This is fine for pyjamas, not for jackets. Even our remote returning-customer orders include a strong recommendation to come back into the shop on your next Phuket visit so we can confirm the block is still accurate.
Any shop selling a first-time “bespoke” suit with zero fittings is not offering bespoke. They’re offering sized-to-measure off-the-rack.
Fitting-day etiquette
Four small things that make fittings more productive:
- Wear the shoes you’ll wear with the suit. Particularly for trouser fittings.
- Wear a dress shirt, not a t-shirt. The jacket drape is different over a dress shirt.
- Eat normally. Don’t fitness-fast before a fitting; your waist should be in its usual state.
- Bring your partner or a trusted eye. Most customers can’t see their own shoulder line objectively.
Between-fitting timing
Standard gaps:
- Day 1 → Day 3: 48 hours between consultation and first fitting. Allows cutting and basting.
- Day 3 → Day 5: 48 hours between first and second fitting. Allows re-cut and full assembly.
Compressed timelines (24 hours between fittings) are possible but mean overnight labour, which we don’t do as standard. Rush builds get cut by 48-hour-to-24-hour compression; standard builds stay on the 48-hour rhythm.
What if I miss a fitting?
If you miss the first fitting, the suit can’t proceed, we can’t cut further without knowing what needs to change. Email or WhatsApp as early as possible to reschedule; we’ll usually slot you in the same day.
If you miss the second fitting but are flying out, we finish to best estimate. Expect slightly less precision on sleeve length and trouser break. You can WhatsApp us photos once home and we’ll adjust on your next visit or ship replacement trousers.
Our fitting policy
- Standard build (5 days): 2 fittings included, no extra charge.
- Luxury build (Tier D): 3 fittings included.
- Rush build (2-3 days): 1 fitting, priced at a small discount to reflect reduced labour.
- Returning customer: 1 fitting by default, extra fittings at no charge if you want them.
- Fitting running late on your end: we hold the slot 30 minutes. After that we release it and reschedule.
