Chinese New Year is the busiest single week in Patong’s tailoring calendar. Chinese tourists from mainland China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore and Malaysia arrive for the celebrations, and many visit tailor shops to order festive pieces, often in red or with red accents. Here’s what to expect during CNY week and how to order.
The cultural background
Chinese New Year (春节) is celebrated over roughly 15 days starting from the lunar new year’s eve. The first week is the most active. Red is the traditional colour of good fortune, prosperity and celebration, hence the ubiquity of red decorations, clothing and gifts.
In Phuket specifically:
- CNY brings a large influx of Chinese tourists to Patong (second-largest Chinese tourism surge after Golden Week).
- Local Thai-Chinese community celebrates with family reunions, temple visits, and traditional banquets.
- Tailor shops see a 3-4× spike in Chinese-speaking customers.
- Peak demand is in the 10 days leading up to CNY day.
What people order during CNY
Four categories that dominate CNY tailor orders:
1. Red tangzhuang jackets
Traditional Chinese jacket style, stand-up collar, frog closures (knotted cloth buttons), subtle embroidery. Tourists often order these for CNY Eve reunion dinners or Spring Festival events back home.
Fabric: Traditional silk brocade in red (sometimes gold, sometimes navy). Tier C, D at our shop, ~THB 18,000-35,000 depending on fabric and embroidery.
2. Red-accent business suits
Not fully red, but charcoal or navy business suits with red accent linings, red pocket squares, or red button threads. Worn by Chinese professionals attending CNY business events back home.
Price: Same as standard business suit (THB 20,000-30,000 Tier C) with free lining upgrade to red silk.
3. Red or crimson cocktail dresses
For women attending CNY family banquets. Red silk or crimson cheongsam-inspired styles. We make both traditional Chinese silhouettes and more contemporary cuts.
Price: THB 12,000-25,000 for cheongsam-style; THB 15,000-35,000 for formal occasion dress.
4. Children’s CNY outfits
Small tangzhuang jackets for boys, mini cheongsams for girls. Quick turnaround (2 days), modest price.
Price: THB 2,500-6,000 per piece.
When to order if you want CNY pieces
The practical timeline:
Ideal: 3 weeks before CNY
Full 5-7 day build with proper fittings. Shop is busy but not overwhelmed. Fabric selection still strong (rare red silks may be running low).
Acceptable: 2 weeks before CNY
Standard build but book early in your trip. Some popular red silk colours may be limited.
Tight: 1 week before CNY
Rush build only. 3-day turnaround with one fitting. Limited fabric selection, expect mid-tier rather than luxury silk.
Peak week: CNY week itself
Tailors are operating at full capacity. New orders in CNY week typically deliver after CNY, not helpful if you wanted the piece for the celebrations. However, tailors are often willing to work on post-CNY orders during this week (wedding, event, spring orders).
Fabric availability during CNY
Popular red silks sell out across Patong during peak CNY demand. Our shop pre-orders extra red silk brocade in November to handle January/February demand, and we still sometimes run low on specific shades (imperial red, crimson, scarlet variants).
If you’re flexible on exact red shade, availability is strong even late in the season. If you want a specific exact red from a reference photo, book 3+ weeks ahead.
Shop hours during CNY
Most Patong shops extend hours during CNY week:
- Expect queues from the moment the shutters go up.
- The last hour before closing is the busiest of the day.
- Sunday opening standard (not reduced).
Our shop runs its full 11:00-23:00 hours, seven days a week, straight through CNY peak week.
Chinese-speaking staff
If you’re more comfortable in Mandarin or Cantonese:
- Johnny speaks conversational Mandarin from 25 years of serving Chinese customers.
- Two of our fitters speak Mandarin fluently; one speaks Cantonese.
- Our fabric room cards are labeled in English + Mandarin + Thai.
- Shop signage in all three languages.

Traditional vs modern silhouettes
For CNY orders, we make both:
Traditional
- Tangzhuang (唐装), the classic Chinese jacket with mandarin collar and frog closures.
- Cheongsam (旗袍), fitted women’s dress, high mandarin collar, side slit.
- Changshan (长衫), long robe, less common but available.
Traditional pieces are often worn for formal family events, reunion dinners, visits to elders, temple ceremonies.
Modern
- Suits with red lining.
- Blazers with red piping.
- Contemporary dresses with Chinese-inspired details (mandarin collar on Western-cut dress, frog buttons on a modern blouse).
- Co-ordinated sets for family photos.
Modern pieces work across CNY and non-CNY contexts, more wearable for non-traditional occasions.
Family co-ordination
A common CNY order is for a whole family:
- Father in charcoal suit with red accent.
- Mother in crimson cocktail dress.
- Son in mini red tangzhuang.
- Daughter in small cheongsam.
- Matching pocket squares, ties, hair accessories.
We coordinate fabric, colour matching, and fittings across the group. Typical 4-person family order: THB 50,000-90,000 for cohesive CNY wardrobe. Fittings staggered across 4-5 days.
Post-CNY orders
If CNY is too late to order during CNY week itself, the Chinese traditional calendar has other occasions:
- Lantern Festival (15 days after CNY), smaller but similar red/gold themes.
- Spring Festival business events, February to March.
- Qingming Festival (April), more subdued, white/gray.
- Mid-Autumn Festival (September/October), moon cakes and family gatherings.

For Western customers during CNY
If you’re in Patong during CNY week as a Western tourist:
- Expect longer waits at tailor shops (30-60 min on walk-in).
- Book in advance if possible.
- The first slots after opening at 11:00 are typically quieter than afternoons.
- Consider this a great time to observe the cultural celebrations, temple visits, street decorations, lion dances.
- Your suit orders are still taken, just with slightly extended turnaround if placed during peak week.
