The usual question isn’t “can I afford a custom suit?”, it’s “is a custom suit actually cheaper than buying two off-the-rack ones that wear out?” The answer depends on cost per wear, fabric quality, and how you count the fit. Here’s the full math.
The sticker-price comparison
Off-the-rack at a UK/EU high street retailer:
- Entry-level wool blend suit: £180, £280 (~THB 8,000-12,500)
- Mid-market pure wool: £400, £700 (~THB 18,000-31,500)
- Upper mid-market (canvassed): £900, £1,600 (~THB 40,500-72,000)
Bespoke at New David Jone Fashion in Patong, 2026 ranges:
- Tier A (polyester-rayon blends): from ~THB 8,000 two-piece
- Tier B (Thai mill wools): ~THB 13,000-18,000
- Tier C (Italian Super 120s, 130s wool): ~THB 20,000-30,000
- Tier D (luxury, Super 150s, cashmere, mohair blends): ~THB 35,000+
At first glance, a mid-market UK suit is in the same band as a tier-C Italian-wool bespoke in Patong. That’s deliberate, bespoke tailoring in Thailand is priced to be competitive with upper-mid retail in Europe, because the craft is comparable but labour costs are lower.
The hidden cost of fit
An off-the-rack suit is cut to a block, a standard body shape that averages across thousands of customers. If you are within a few millimetres of that block, it fits. If you aren’t, the suit has to be altered (shoulders cannot realistically be altered, but sides, sleeves, trousers can) or it never fits properly.
Typical alteration spend on a UK high-street suit: £60, £120 (~THB 2,700-5,400).
And shoulder fit, the single most visible part of a suit, cannot be altered on a ready-made jacket. If the shoulder is too wide or too narrow, the suit will always look borrowed. On a bespoke suit, the shoulder is cut to you from the start.
Cost per wear
Here’s where the comparison gets interesting. Divide total cost by expected number of wears.
A £500 off-the-rack pure wool suit worn weekly for two years: 2 years × 50 weeks × 1 wear = 100 wears. £500 ÷ 100 = £5 per wear.
A THB 20,000 bespoke tier-C suit worn weekly for ten years: 10 × 50 × 1 = 500 wears. THB 20,000 ÷ 500 = THB 40 per wear (~£0.90).
A bespoke suit doesn’t just last longer because the fabric is better, it lasts longer because it fits. Suits that fit get worn. Suits that don’t fit hang in the wardrobe and are replaced. The ten-year lifespan is realistic if you bought a canvassed construction in a classic weight.
Why a bespoke suit outlasts a ready-made one
Four technical reasons:
- Canvas construction. A canvassed jacket has a horsehair canvas hand-stitched between the outer cloth and the lining. The canvas gives the jacket its shape and flexes with your body. Fusible (glued) canvas, what most off-the-rack uses, bubbles after multiple dry cleanings and the jacket visibly collapses. Full-canvas is ~THB 4,000 additional cost over half-canvas at our shop; the difference over 10 years is hundreds of wears of shape retention.
- Seam allowance. Bespoke suits are cut with 2-4 cm of extra fabric inside every seam so they can be let out if you gain weight. Off-the-rack is cut to minimum seam allowance, you cannot grow.
- Fabric weight. Tropical-weight Italian wool (240-280 g/m) drapes well, breathes in heat, and recovers from wrinkles. Fast-fashion suits use lightweight blends that crease and pull threads.
- Buttonholes and hand finishing. Hand-stitched buttonholes and pick-stitched lapels don’t just look better, they distribute stress along the fabric more evenly. Machine buttonholes pull the cloth open over time.
The travel math
For a tourist, there’s a separate calculation: what’s the price of a bespoke suit relative to your trip?
A 10-day Phuket trip for a Western couple costs roughly:
- Flights: £1,200, £2,000 per person
- Accommodation: £700, £1,500
- Food, activities, transfers: £500, £1,000
Adding a THB 20,000 suit (~£450) is under 10% of total trip cost, and you walk out with a garment that’s worth ~£1,200 in equivalent quality back home. Buying the suit effectively pays for a week of accommodation. Many of our regulars come specifically for this reason.
When off-the-rack actually wins
Not always is bespoke the right answer. Off-the-rack is better if:
- You need a suit in 24 hours for a specific event and can’t extend.
- You have a “block-standard” body (typical build, symmetric proportions) where an off-the-rack will actually fit you.
- You wear suits three or four times a year, the cost-per-wear math flips because the lower usage doesn’t amortise the bespoke premium.
- You prefer the retail warranty and return model. Most bespoke shops guarantee fit but don’t accept returns.
If that’s your situation, buy off-the-rack and spend the savings elsewhere.
The in-between: made-to-measure
Between off-the-rack and bespoke sits made-to-measure (MTM). MTM uses a pre-made block but cuts it to your dimensions. You get much better fit than off-the-rack at noticeably lower cost than full bespoke. In Patong, MTM typically runs THB 6,000-12,000 for a two-piece, with a single fitting and a 2-day turnaround. It’s genuinely good value if you don’t need the top-tier fabric or full-canvas construction.
The bottom-line recommendation
If you wear suits regularly, for work, events, travel, weddings, one genuinely bespoke suit in the tier-C range (THB 20,000-25,000) will serve you better over ten years than three off-the-rack suits bought sequentially as each wears out. The math works, the fit is better, and the suit gets worn more because you actually like putting it on.
If you wear suits rarely, buy one good off-the-rack suit with proper alterations and skip the bespoke trip.
