Shoulders sit wrong, waist sits in the wrong place, trouser rise is built for a “standard” hip-to-waist ratio that describes very few women accurately. Men’s off-the-rack blocks work for a reasonable percentage of men because male body proportions cluster relatively tightly around a standard form. 2. Bust accommodation
Women’s jackets need shaping around the bust. Off-the-rack suits use average bust projections and either fit close (too tight for larger busts) or fit loosely (baggy for smaller busts). Custom tailoring adjusts this to your specific measurement.

Cut choices
Women’s business suits come in several silhouettes. The three most practical for professional wardrobes:
Classic fitted
Waist suppression brings the jacket in at the natural waist. Slight flare below the waist to accommodate hips. Jacket length ends mid-hip. Flatters most body shapes; reads “professional” without being severe.
Relaxed (Japanese-inspired)
Less waist suppression, jacket slightly longer. Reads “creative professional” rather than “investment banker.” Popular with architects, creative directors, design executives.
Structured power-suit
Strong shoulder line, precisely suppressed waist, shorter jacket. Reads “senior executive.” Works well if you want the suit to project authority.

At your fitting, these four areas get extra attention compared to men’s suits:
- Bust dart placement, where the seam shaping runs from the side seam toward the bust point. Correct placement makes the jacket sit flat under the bust instead of gaping.
- Back shoulder blade accommodation, women’s back curves are often more pronounced; the jacket needs room across the shoulder blades without bagging.
- Waist suppression depth, how much the jacket nips in at the waist. Personal preference meets body shape.
- Jacket closure position, where the top button lands relative to your bust. A millimetre wrong here changes how the jacket reads.
All four are caught at the basted fitting and corrected. That’s why we always recommend two fittings minimum for women’s suits.

Same 5-day standard as men’s suits:
- Day 1: Consultation, measurement, fabric choice (60-90 min).
- Day 3: First fitting on basted suit (30-45 min).

Rush build (3 days) possible with compromises (fused canvas, single fitting). Not recommended for first-time women’s suits given the fitting sensitivity.
